Wavelet packet analysis with coe cient thresholding is the basis for the detection. The e ectiveness of the method is illustrated by analyzing experimental data on sediment electrochemical redox potential in a tidal microcosm. The signi cance of the technique is that it can extract periodic phenomena from experimental data corrupted by catastrophic and random events, provide a signature of the basic periodic component, and give an estimate of the degree of deviation from periodic behavior. Consequently, it has potential applications in the analysis of quasi-periodic signals such as electrocardiograms (ECGs), where the determination of the extent of quasi-periodicity is of critical importance.

Phase synchronization between several interacting processes from univariate data.
A novel approach is suggested for detecting the presence or absence of synchronization between two or three interacting processes with different time scales in univariate data. It is based on an angle-of-return-time map. A model is derived to describe analytically the behavior of angles for a periodic oscillator under weak periodic and quasiperiodic forcing. An explicit connection is demonstrat...
متن کاملInformation transfer with rate-modulated Poisson processes: a simple model for nonstationary stochastic resonance.
Stochastic resonance in a simple model of information transfer is studied for sensory neurons and ensembles of ion channels. An exact expression for the information gain is obtained for the Poisson process with the signal-modulated spiking rate. This result allows one to generalize the conventional stochastic resonance (SR) problem (with periodic input signal) to the arbitrary signals of finite...
متن کاملRobust Periodic Motion and Motion Symmetry Detection
We describe a robust technique for detecting nonstationary periodic motion from a moving and static camera. We also describe a robust technique for discriminating motion symmetries (periodic motion classification), which we apply to classifying running humans (bipeds) and canines (quadrupeds). The system has been implemented to run in real-time (30 Hz) on standard PC workstations.
متن کاملIdentification and quantification of nonstationary chaotic behavior
Nonstationary chaotic behavior is not an oxymoron. We present two methods for capturing nonstationary chaos, then present a few examples including biological signals, ocean waves and traffic flow. The issue is of practical interest because it is often useful to capture when nonstationary events take place and it is desirable to know over what periods a signal is stationary.
متن کاملSpectral Kurtosis Theory: A Review through Simulations
Kurtosis of a time signal has been a popular tool for detecting nongaussianity. Recently, kurtosis as a function frequency defined in spectral domain has been successfully used in the fault detection of induction motors, machine bearings. A link between the nongaussianity and nonstationaity has been established through Wold-Cramer’s decomposition of a nonstationary signal, and the properties of...
